Research Associate - Cetaceans programme 

Project: Coastal cetaceans of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra
Programme: Cetaceans programme 

Tenure: 6months

 

About the Project

The project looks to ascertain cetacean distribution in the coastal waters of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and assess the quality of their habitats against factors like fisheries pressure and water quality.

 

About the Position 

This is an entry-level position. The Research Assistant is expected to:

  • Assist on vessel-based surveys with setting up and maintaining equipment, help with data collection for water quality and fisheries pressures and from time to time be an observer during systematic sampling for cetaceans.
  • Data entry and processing
  • Assist in capacity building workshops with various stakeholders
  • Engage with fishing communities for awareness activities
  • Assist during marine mammal strandings

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • A Master’s Degree in Life Sciences, Zoology or Wildlife Biology
  • Should be able to communicate fluently in English and Hindi
  • Should be comfortable with extended periods at sea in a small fishing vessel


Additional Skills

  • Candidates with experience in fishery sciences or water-quality sampling methods will be preferred
  • Being able to communicate in Marathi
  • Proficiency in biodiversity surveys, data collection and assessment will be preferred
